My old brass Sestrel compass needs a couple of screws about 3mm long with domed and slotted heads. I have been in correspondence with Sirs for weeks but its promises have so far been without result. What's a source of small screws like these? Thanks.

If you keep your boat on the Tamar River, near Plymouth, then the Fastenings Shop on Exeter Street has always been very helpful to me. They supply a lot of the local marine trade. Keith is the owner, and he stocks 316/A4/A6 stainless and some bronze screws/fastenings and boatnails etc etc

the threads will probably be a BA size, look in yellow pages for a clock repairer, they have stocks of them, usually in brass.

A good model shop may be able to help, especially if it does spares/repairs. Take one of the screws in and ask for some to match. Failing that a decent car parts place, not Halfords but a proper one, they often have pots of small screws etc.
