I'm getting fed up with my Vire 12, fed up with water pump inaccessibility, fed up with the core plugs rotting away, fed up with carrying 20 litres of 2 stroke mix on board etc. etc. I could go on......

I've started to look at replacing the engine with a small diesel.

According to the Feeling 720 brochure the boat has a dry weight of 1800kg so we're looking at a power requirement of 7.2hp.

I am looking at the Farymann Yellow River Star 18w marine engine - http://www.farymann.de/en/18wMarine.aspx.
It's rated at 7.1hp but according to the UK agent the power output is "conservative". It is competitively priced @€2990 +vat ex works in basic format.

Do you think this engine will be powerful enough for inshore sailing in and around the Thames Estuary? Does anyone have experience with this engine?

Had a quick look at the brochure. Says the crank-case is light alloy, if that also applies to the cylinder block, I wouldn't be keen for a direct cooled marine engine.
Also, the alternator is small, 160w but no worse than a Vire I suppose.
It's lighter than a small Beta, but dimensionally a fairly similar footprint but lower in height..

The BMW / Hatz D7 & 12 were about as good as the Petter mini 6 & minitwin 12
 
Isn't this engine the same as used in the Paguro, Dolphin, Mastervolt 4Kw generators? If so I think it is pretty reliable in its marinized form. Don't know about the gearbox though.

I don't think so. I had a boat with an outboard previously and although I got on OK with it, I'd consider it an absolute last resort with this boat. Once you've had electric start, full battery charging, gear change & throttle combined in the cockpit, you don't want to go back. Also I've got a folding prop. :)

There is a mounting for an outboard on the Feeling, but it's fixed and there's no way of lifting the leg & prop out of the water.
 
That is a crude old design that has never had much success in the market. The basic price is deceptive as installation costs will add at least 50% irrespective of which engine you fit so worth spending a bit more getting a better base engine. The Yanmar 1GM and the Nanni/Beta 10 are virtually the same footprint, although the latter are a bit heavier. However, they are infinitely smoother than a single cylinder, quieter, freshwater cooled, bigger alternator and based on widely used Kubota engines.

Have had both Yanmars and Nanni. The Yanmar is the best single cylinder engine, very simple reliable but less refined than the 2 cylinder engines. However, as said it is at the end of its production life and if you are buying new the twins are a better bet. If you can find a good used 1GM they can be good buys, saving you about £1500 on a new unit.
