Time on my hands

Um, excuse me butting in. I'm a mobo'er you know. Hope you don'tmind if I ask you something.

Two of my friends and their swmbo's who own a rag and stick thing have invited me and my swmbo to join them on a trip to Watchett from Swansea over the weekend. Now, when I go to Watchett it takes me just short of two hours. My mate is approximating an eight hour trip, overnight in Watchett and about an eight hour trip back.

So, my dilemma is: what on earth do I do for the extra 12 hours that we'll be on the water? I mean, I can't read a book cos that would be rude and there's only so much conversation you can have. How do you suggest I pass the time?

You must however, have an awful lot to discuss with them in the way of small talk..... you know.... the stuff that normally gets ignored on a mobo because it can't be heard over the engine noise....

A far trickier problem is what to do overnight in Watchet apart from get plastered, have some fish & chips and join in a fight.

I can usually pass the time swearing at things that aren't working properly, but I suppose if it's not your boat...

Strange as it may sound, making a raggie go anywhere is very, very tiring - by comparison my motorboat is a rest cure. BUT as a newbie not into wind 'n tides 'n things you could just be . . . a bored passenger. I just hope you're don't throw up for eight hours - that'll larn yer!

You will find that you will be doing what many raggies seem to do (going by some of the threads on here) and will soon find the time slipping by -

Logging and discussing MoBo wakes and how inconsiderate they are.

Logging and discussing infringements of the ColRegs.

Making wild claims as to why one anchor is much better than the other and the effects on each of them of such things as hard bottoms, weed, etc, etc. You don't need to swot up on this, you can say whatever you like with the same effect.

Playing with and pulling bits of rope (my favourite is making cats' cradles with the genoa sheets).

Planning the passage down to the last minor detail, entering lots of waypoints into a little plotty thing but then finding that the wind has changed direction and/or strength and the tides were early so one has to do it all again.

Discussing what "real" sailors drink and eat.

Getting wet and cold, or if sunny discussing what are the best wet weather gear and boots (just claim anything beginning with "M" and you will appear intelligent")

Discussing the merits and demerits of long keels, short keels, fin keels, bilge keels and (in the case of one make of boat) no keels.

The merits and demerits of manky awld boats compared to modern all white boats (just go with the flow for that one 'cos will depend on what boat yer on).

There's a start - so as you see there will be plenty to keep you occupied.
