We have a NZ registered yacht, can anyone tell us how long we can stay in Greece with it. We were planning on entering August this year, then in September leaving it somewhere like Preveza while we return to NZ to earn another trip next year, returning the following June/July and taking it on a slow trip over to Turkey in that year. Is Preveza a good place to leave it do you think
Thank you

This is from the EU site about temporary importation of yachts, http://ec.europa.eu/taxation_customs/cus...icle_994_en.htm

How long can the yacht stay in the EU?

Normally, you can use the vessel in the EU for one and a half years. In technical terms, the period for discharge for privately used means of sea and inland waterway transport is 18 months. This is laid down in Article 562(e) of the implementing provisions of the Customs Code. If the boat is 'laid up' ('put in bond') for a time the possibility exists for not counting the period of non-use (see below).

Can the 18 months be extended if the yacht is not used? You may want to go home for Christmas!

Yes, the eighteen month period may be extended for the time during which the yacht is not used. Article 553(2) second sub-paragraph of the implementing provisions of the Customs Code allows for this. However, the maximum overal period during which the yacht can remain in the EU is 24 months (Article 140(2) of the Customs Code).

Its worth looking at the marina at Sibari in southern Italy for a winter lay up. It is very secure in every sense and not expensive. We were there last winter and will be there next winter also, and its not too far from the northern Ionian They have a good website.

I confirm macd's response. Take a look at Noonsite for additional references on this. Another matter though is the Greek cruising log requirement. You will be expected to get one when you first arrive in Greek waters and it will be valid for an initial 3mths. I recall there was an overall limit of 12mths but it is not needed during layup times so long as you advise the authorities of the layup which would need to be done with the help of the boatyard.
Preveza has 3 main yards for haulout. As long as you don't want to live aboard and want to access the area in summer months it should be fine. Otherwise I agree with Steve that Gouvia is the most convenient for access either via Athens or Italy. You can haul out or leave the boat in the water.

MacD is correct, and the Greek port authorities are well briefed on non-EU flag rules. You'll find a lot more about port etiquette in Greece on my web site.

Preveza is satisfactory for leaving a boat ashore, with a choice of three yards. There are many other possibilities around the Ionian, depending how 'ethnic' you want to go, and some are very inexpensive indeed.

One thing to bear in mind is your individual visa requirements (as apart from the boat's requirements) for length of stay. You must renew your visa before 90 days have passed.

You also will have to pay a circulation tax after your first three months (levied from your transit log) with further payments for longer periods. Pay these on time, or risk a fine!

For lots of detail about cruising areas of Greece, go to my web site.

Thank you all soooo much, what fantastic and invaluable advice, appreciate some more options for wintering also. We are thinking that it might be better to winter it on the hard this year. The last 2 years in Croatia we have had someone reliable we know starting the motor and opening sea cocks etc. This might be a problem where we don't know people. Also, might be a good chance for the GRP, if that's it, to dry out for a while. Perhaps this will discourage osmosis, or am I just getting garbled now. Thanks again
