Pains Wessex flares. Expired December 2012. They have been kept in sealed dry container including 18 months ashore.

If any one wants them I can deliver them in Gosport or a few miles either side of the A3 (obviously free-of-charge).

- 2 off Lifesmoke Mk 8

- 4 off ParaRed Rocket Mk 8A

- 4 off Red Hand Flare Mk 8

Why pass the buck ? Why don't you dispose of them responsibly or is that too much trouble ? I don't get why you think anyone would want out of date flares .

There was an ' amnesty ' to hand in old flares going around Northney and other places recently, is it still on ?

You're right, there is (August and October), and I intend to take them there if no one wants them. But sometimes people want old flares so I thought I would offer them on here first.

Are you some kind of drivelling imbecile, or are you just doing a good imitation of one?

I know perfectly well how, and where, to dispose of them but a couple of years ago someone on this forum did want some.

I think the best place I could dispose of them is up your smug sanctimonious ********.

The only prat I see around here is a drivelling imbecile pikey trying to off load out of date flares

We will just have to wait and see if any one is stupid enough to take you up on your offer .

Seems a bit harsh. I have once or twice come across people sailing on a tight budget who deliberately equip themselves with recently-expired flares, because it costs them nothing and the odds of a four-year-old flare malfunctioning are probably not all that much worse than a three-year-old one.

That said, anyone who wants to do that can probably get a 2013 set off one of their neighbours free for the asking (if anyone wants my pair of 2013 rockets...) so it's unlikely that they'll jump at the OP's offer. But your vitriolic criticism of it seems out of kilter.

Fair point - I thought you'd started the slanging, but on re-reading I see your initial objection was relatively polite.

I didn't realise there was a minimum income requirement for a Clyst Boating License.

Far as I'm concerned, anyone who lives near the sea ought to be able to use it. The people who shouldn't be allowed on the water are those who live miles inland earning huge piles of dosh which they use to push up the price of keeping a boat on the coast :p :p :)

My concerns are for safety . Flares have an expiry date for a reason and the flares being offered are 18months out of date !! If they were nearing their expiry I could sort of understand them being offered but not being way out of date . Try going to France with out of date flares .

I probably will next week, unless we decide to go to the Channel Islands instead. Must admit that issue hadn't occurred to me.

(The reason is that I'm in the process of switching to a rolling schedule of flare replacement, rather than a big cost every three years. As part of that, two of my four rockets are currently a few months past their date. Everything else is in date, and I'll be replacing the rockets as soon as the new stock gets into the chandleries in the autumn.)

Some facts:

It is not uncommon for people to want out-of-date flares. A trawl through past postings on this forum will show that people have passed on out-of-date flares to others who have been glad to have them.

In December 2006 someone posting on this forum wanted some out-of-date flares and I was happy to deliver them to him near Camberley (obviously at no cost to him). It didn't bother me that this diversion from my usual route down the A3 cost me more in petrol, and time, than it would have done to take them a couple of miles to the Coastguard at Lee-on-Solent who, at that time, accepted out-of-date flares without the need for amnesties etc.

There are two flare amnesty days coming up in the Solent area in August (at Lymington) and October (at Hamble). For me to take the flares there would be easy and would cost me almost nothing as I often go to those places.

This shows that my offer of out-of-date flares is certainly not motivated by any wish to save money on my part, I simply wanted to offer them to anyone who might want them.

As to whether people should carry out-of-date flares, that is a matter for them to decide, not me (or anyone else here). People who are about to make long voyages outside the reach of EU bureaucracy and who might want to save money are, presumably, capable of deciding for themselves whether to accept some extra flares that are in good condtion.

I recall buying some just out of date flares at the chandlers that used to be down near the market in Chichester. That was 1986. I eventually disposed of them at an amnesty 2 years ago. They were the old metal tube type with a pull wire, and the bomb disposal guy did give them an inquisitive look and put them in a special container. I bet he tried them out and that they worked! ;)

Do you not have a pressure cooker? You can make a superb chicken broth from that quite easily. It also works for a lamb bone too.

Put the bones (with some meat left on them is best) into a couple of ltrs of water in a pressure cooker, bring up to steam with the heavy weight & simmer for 6 mins. Cool & remove bone, add appropriate oxo cube or two and some diced veggies - carrots, celery, spuds & a diced onion are suggestions (but barley & lentils are fine too - just avoid things that will dominate the flavour) and give it another 6 mins. While that is cooking, remove the meat from the bones (it will mostly fall off) & dice any large bits. Discard bones or give to cat.

Cool & remove lid, and add Worcester sauce &/or cornflour thickening, put meat back in & heat up & serve. Sometimes I use broken noodles instead of cornflour to get a chicken noodle soup rather than a thick broth.

We had lamb today & I will be making a chicken one tomorrow, it makes a very nourishing meal.
