Sorry for asking a rather lame question but the boat is 5 hours away so it's not easy to just nip over and measure up :p

The old analogue Autohelm 1000 that came with our boat is 'broken with an F' and I was considering a Simrad TP22 as a replacement. Will it physically fit? Powerful enough etc for a Hustler 30?

Bite the bullet and get an Autohelm 2000. The smaller sizes are OK for light use just motoring, but not powerful enough for heavier weather. The size guides on the Raymarine site are good.

Don't the following extracts from the product descriptions suggest that the TP22 is more powerful than the ST2000???

TP22 is a powerful midrange pilot for boats of up to 11m (36ft) in length and maximum displacement of 5000kg.

Raymarine Autohelm ST2000+ is identical to the ST1000+, but has even greater reserves of helming power, thanks to a superb recirculating-ball drive and highly optimized engineering design. Its thrust and responsiveness make it the ideal choice for tiller-steered boats of up to 4,500kg (10,000 lb)displacement.

Yes, you are right. Relied too much on memory and thought it was the smaller.

Autohelm always comes out a bit better in the comparison tests, but not a lot in it. Guess the choice is price and whether going with the market leader is better.

My online reading suggests that the Raymarine has a bit of a rep for not being as watertight as one might hope...

I have the 32 on a similar boat.

I am fairly sure that both the tiller pin and deck fitting are interchangeable. At any rate they were when I took out my old, broken, Autohelm 2000 to replace it with the Simrad.

The 32 is great for motoring, ok in moderate conditions and struggles in heavy going. You certainly cannot ignore your sail trim or reefing.

The 22 may be cutting if fine have a look at the spec. It may be that the 32 offers very little extra power or speed, but has a built in pencil sharpener and LED flashlight. You know the sort of junk.

I have just fitted a new, built in, Raymarine job - but am not yet confident enough with it to flog the Simrad.
