Hi guys
Can anyone tell me if its possible to change from Tiller to Wheelsteer on a Sig 33. or is the cross beem needed for hull strength. As swimbo & I said we;d never buy a yacht that had the boom control cross thingy in the cock-pit after seeing a lady crew member on a flotila hol almost break her leg after slipping in front of it,...
but Iv fallen in love with one.!!.help!!.... she might give me the Green light if its poss

Well, you could do it, because I strongly doubt that the mainsheet track was a 'designed in' part of the structural strength of the deck. You could mount one at the hatch, where it will trap fingers, across the stern, where the mainsheet will try to garotte you each time you gybe, or mount it on the coachroof, where you'll need a winch to get the sheet tight enough.

But, bear in mind:-

1/ It's a real shame to convert a boat that is nice to helm with a tiller into one with less feel available.

and

2/ There are loads of places to almost break your legs all over sailing boats! It's part of the fun - counting the bruises after a weekend...

1. Give SWMBO a severe talking to about the utter supremacy of the tiller cf wheel. and the need to have the maninsheet traveller to hand if you want to sail fast and upright and get into port before the hairdresser closes.

2. Duck.

New boat has tiller - is that why she will be faster?

Joking aside, I'm looking forward to feeling what the boat is really up to - a whell masks the right moment to trim or reef as you just dont get the fine feedback.

We cruised (and occasionally raced) our Sigma 33 and for its size and age there are few more better mannered boats when under cruising rig. I cannot imagine wanting to change to wheel - the cockpit isn't the right shape anyway. Try it out a few times with the tiller: don't overpress with too much canvas when you haven't got a row of railbait hanging over the side and you will be pleasantly suprised at how well mannered and responsive the Sigma is to sail. Even when cruising we regularly kept up with 36 footers. The helm (with tiller) is a joy.

Regarding the mainsail track, you get used to things... We thought of using it to fit a cockpit table on when in harbour. Design one quickly and perhaps SWMBO will be convinced?
