I am thinking of changing my Autohelm 1000, which is tired and emotional(much like its owner) for a Simrad TP22. Does anyone know if life is so simple? Are the pins and sockets interchangeable? Are the fitting dimensions more or less the same, or do I need to drill even more holes in the boat?
Or should I just stick with Autohelm, which is quite a bit more expensive?

I fitted a Simrad not the same model but it was to replace an autohelm. The pins and sockets were the same but the unit was longer so a new hole had to be drilled. think mine is a TP20 works very well and powerful in heavier weather.
Check the dimensions the same on the new models?
or you may have the same problem.

Good luck

Thats worth knowing. I'd love to replace my 25+ year old Autohelm with something more modern but it just keeps on going. It went back to Nautec a couple of times, and was repaired for free once, in its youth but has been totally reliable ever since. The best bit of kit I ever bought!

I had something like a 10% discount from a broken analogue 3000 for a new ST3000. I certainly dont guarantee that you cant do better from some of the discount shops.

My old Buchanan 32 which is shortly to be relaunched came with a great red and black beast labelled Autohelm Mk2, which I think predates the analogue Autohelm 1000 which I also have one of. Both still appear to work as far as I can tell from a shore-based test, but I need a tiller fitting so I can find out for sure (the kind that fits under the tiller). Anyone know where I can get one?

T'aint the bent steel bit that's the main problem, its the pin that goes with it that fits in the end of the Autohelm. If I had the latter I could probably bodge the rest.
