Agree with roach. What's wrong with just a long tiller line and a bargeman's hitch?
The one I use is about 2 times width of boat, attached to bulwarks at each end, slack in the middle. The upwind end of the line is wrapped around the tiller and either used to steer with or tied off to it with a bargeman's hitch.
