Don't have an almanac/tidal flow book/chart with me.

Could anybody tell me what the timings are for tidal flows in Poole bay/Christchurch bay wrt HW Poole? I.e. when does the flow in the bays change from East going flood to west going ebb wrt timing of hw? Don't sail there myself, so don't know.

Thanks very much for any help!

Should add - I'm looking a Poole - Hamble delivery, and was wondering how people time it wrt HW Poole/ HW Portsmouth.

Boat is 35' AWB - passage planning speed 6 kts or so.

Looking at the tidal diamonds on my IMRAY chart for the area, they are based on H/W Plymouth. Poole Bay changes to E 1hr before H/W same for Christchurch Bay.

Hurst entrance is based on H/W Portsmouth and shifts E 5 hours after H/W until 2 hours before.

Tides in the bays aren't strong, your constraint will be to have the flood tide under you entering the Solent at Needles Channel/Hurst Point, and then eastbound up the Solent. Tide in the Needles channel turns to go east approx one hour before LW Portsmouth. At 6 knots plus tide-help you want about 2.0 to 2.5 hours to get from Needles Channel to Hamble.

So if you planned to be at Hurst Point anywhen from approx HW portsmouth -7h to HW Portsmouth -3h your dory will be hunky. You can work back to your Poole departure from there.

Everything to do with tides in Poole is related to Low Water due to the double high. However, most tidal stream data is related to HW Dover or HW Portsmouth for your area of interest. I don't have detailed info at hand but from the Almanac, West going commences about 1/2 hour before HW Portsmouth or around HW Dover, East going about 5¼ before HW Portsmouth or 5¾ after HW Dover.

If you are going East, the critical tidal gates are the Needles and Hurst Narrows which should be reached while the tide is still fllooding, pushing tide up the Solent is not recommeded either. If going West you want the ebb at the above tidal gates and to have entered Poole Harbour before the second HW and the start of the very strong ebb.

Best take the last of the ebb out of Poole, If you've a deep keel you might want to stick to the fairway rather than take the Swash inshore. Keep in towards Hengistbury head and through the North Channel (North Head to Starboard). Carry the flood through Hurst and up the Solent to Hamble.

Agree with comment that tides in Poole bay minimal but concentrate on timings around HURST wouldnt go off shore, stick to North channel inshore passage around Hurst. On way out of Poole Harbour go out to Bar Buoy (last green before turning East) as the inshore passage around Hook sands pretty shallow and lumpy in any wind.

If you're planning your trip for this Easter weekend, and the sun is out, then there could be traffic waiting for the bridge to open on the Quay. Bridge opens on the half hour. This is returning boats in the early evening:
