From MBY News:

[ QUOTE ]
A spokesman said: "These unusually high tides are a national phenomenon, which are caused by planets lining up to increase the influence of the moon on our tides."

And there was me thinking tides were a natural phenomenon /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Apparently lining up Gordon Brown with Tony Blair can cause a massive rise/fall in tides even bigger than those caused by the planets but it is so rare as to be deemed likely never to happen.:D

does anyone have a link to show what the predicted high tides are likely to be ? , as I live on low lying land these high tides affect me a little bit more than most and I can't find anywhere that shows the expected high in my area

Thanks guys , anyone passing me in their boat over the weekend , I'll be the one treading water

sorry Rick , that's why I said 'guys' , both sets of links came up with the same result , but yours had the easier to copy picture , does that mean you wont be looking out for me treading water /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif

Cuh - okay, let you off. I'll throw you a fender to cling onto /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Pressure may be slightly above 1013mb this weekend, so perhaps not quite as high as predicted (but not by much)?

I thought spring tides were caused by the conjunction of the sun and the moon. Did'nt know that planetary influence was a factor as well. Anyone know which planets have an effect?

The planetary influence has to be pretty tiny, I think. The highish tides this weekend are just that the moon and sun are in very good alignment (hence the partial lunar eclipse this evening).

Planet Mass(10^22 kg) Distance Gravity Pull

Mercury 33 92 0.00008 0.0000003
Venus 490 42 0.006 0.00005
Mars 64 80 0.0002 0.000001
Jupiter 200,000 630 0.01 0.000006
Saturn 57,000 1280 0.0007 0.0000002
Uranus 8,700 2720 0.00002 0.000000003
Neptune 10,000 4354 0.00001 0.000000001
Pluto ~1 5764 0.0000000006 0.00000000000004
Moon 7.4 0.384 1.0 1.0

In this table the "Gravity Pull" column shows how hard a planet pulls on the Earth compared to how hard the Moon pulls. The "Tides" column of the table shows how much tidal force each planet exerts on the Earth compared to the tidal force of the Moon.

To see how different planetary alignments might affect you, just add up the numbers. Be careful to align your decimal points! For example, if Mercury and Venus were perfectly aligned with Earth, they could pull on the Earth with 0.00008+0.006 = 0.00608 times the force of our Moon. They would raise tides that would be 0.0000003 + 0.00005 = 0.0000503 times as high as Lunar tides.

The RNLI are at it now too:

[ QUOTE ]
The RNLI is issuing vital advice to all sailors and visitors to the coast between the 8-11 September, as unusually high tides have been forecast.

These unusually high tides are a national phenomenon, which are caused by planets lining up to increase the influence of the moon on our tides.

V interesting. I think. According to the webpage though, if all the planets were lined up, the effect on the tide would still be 5000 times less than the moon causing only 1/25th mm rise in the ocean tides. Yet we are about to experience tides which are significantly higher than an average spring tide
Is this 1/25mm magnified by the UK's topography which generally causes our relatively high tidal range or is it, as rickp has suggested, just that the sun and the moon are so accurately aligned at the moment?

Yes thats what they're called but it does'nt explain why they occur. So far we have 2 theories, planetary influence and/or v accurate alignment of sun/moon. Is it one or other or both?

it's not planetary, see my post for proof

did the calculation for ALL the planets in alignment, and they would produce a tide 0.000057504 the size of the moon alone

Thats why I questioned it in my reply to your post. Begs the question why MBY are printing it if its bollox and others are following suit. You'd think they'd check their facts
