I currently have a Volvo shaft seal which needs burping every time I dry out, which is frequently.
I have heard good things about the Tides marine unti. Can anyone give me expereience of those on drying moorings, or who dry out frequently?

Thanks

Buy the seal from Radice,Italy and your problems are solved

Have a look at the posting at:

I dont know how to place a pdf in this Forum.
It is the first posting.
As you see its basicly the VOLVO Seal with an water inlet and a grease nipple.
(You will love the grease nipple. They supply a grease tube (like toothpaste) you scew it into the nipple and the seal is greased.
Since the seal gets water no need to blurp....
The supplier is ALLPA in the Netherlands.

I have a similar arrangement where a vent pipe runs from the stern tube rather than the seal, allowing a standard Volvo shaft seal to be fitted... (vent pipe terminates at a seacock)

The vent is a good idea if you have room to fit it in the stern tube. You will probably have to drill and tap to fit a nipple. and need to check that there is not a bearing inside. Job to do when the shaft can be pulled back so that you can see the construction of the tube. Seacock is belt and braces and just a vent going well above the heeled water line would be OK - unless of course you capsize when you will probably have more to worry about!

I have a PPS shaft seal with a water feed from the exhaust; Deep Sea Seals do similar. Avoids any burping when drying out.
