Just back from two weeks in, errrmm, changeable conditions. Suffice to say that it was character building. We decided to visit Salen, Loch Sunart, for a meal ashore to celebrate Mme S's birthday. The lady at Salen Jetty was very welcoming, even offering to get us any shopping that we might need as she was on her way over to the shop at Acharacle, a few miles distant. The new pontoons are magnificent, with space IIRC for nine visiting boats. Electricity and fresh water available, as is diesel (at full price, 60/40, and duty free for fishing boats).

Those with fond memories of the leaky conservatory at the hotel will be pleased to know that a new frontage is nearing completion and that the hotel has had quite an effective facelift. The meal was outstanding, but at about the standard price for a decent sit-down. Don't know the guy's name, but I believe that the new chef would not be out of place in fine restaurants in great cities like Glasgow, London or Paris. He'll make a name for himself.

Highly recommended and within easy reach of Dunstaffnage etc.

Visited there last summer, pontoons are indeed excellent. All they need now are things to see and do when you stop! Place was shut when I was there, no shop or anywhere to spend some money. Or buy a coffee.

As far as I am aware, the shop closed down years ago, but I'm told that there are plans to revive it. However it would have to be a commercial proposition and until such times as it is rebuilt and opened the nearest shop will still be at Acharacle. On the other hand, if you want some high quality wool for knitting your ganzies then Salen's the very place.

Good coffee (Illy or Lavazza, I think) had be had at the hotel.

We were at Salen just before the pontoons were in. Picked up a buoy at midday rowed ashore paid for the night before returning aboard. The wind then blew up from the SE so decided leave and
go somewhere quiet in the loch.
Last year visiting Salen on the pontoons casually mentioned our brief last visit whereupon she insisted on returning the £10 mooring fee!! An attitude like a breath of fresh air.

Makes me think of a story from my father, set in 1917 in France just by the lines, when they came upon a SallyAnne Tea stall, having no money they were told "just put penny on the drum when you get back in Blighty." . .. An investment yielding a millionfold over his remaining 70+ years.

Wool place was shut, the hotel seemed to be too!
