I have a through hull spinning log. Problem is - it don't spin! Asking around sailing friends most of them have the same problem. Are these units 'fit for purpose'. I've replaced my twiddler this year and it did work for a couple of outings but then nothing. I did promise myself that I would remove the twiddler when I wasn't using it but that is not always convenient (I have a drying mooring). Has anyone had a more positive experience of these devices?

Drop of light machine oil on the bearings the liberal greasing of the paddle wheel faces, stops grass and those horrid passengers from growing, had 20 years of the problem, did mine in March and is has not been removed at all this season, but inspected on three bottom scrapes. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

The paddle wheel stops from either friction in the bearings or more likely fouling. Where I am fouling is a real roblem. For a long time I removed it after each sail but eventually just removed the whole system and filled the hole. I use GPS for speed or just guess. olewill

Take it out and put in the blanking plug after sailing. That's why it can be taken, and that's why it comes with a blanking plug.

What a bloody ballsache that would be!! /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Mine hasnt worked since I left the UK in August last year. I took it out and cleaned the crap off it before this trip but, as I found out when cleaning the hull, I'd put it back sideways, so it was probably measuring our leeway speed. Took it out again a couple of weeks ago - clogged up with growth. Cleaned it again and put it back the right way, but still doesnt work.

As has been said, GPS does the job, although it would be handy to have boatspeed through the water.

Cheers

Mine, NASA Clipper, is always getting growth on it. Withdrawing it with an ingress of water is not what I want to have to do every time I use the boat. Next year my problem will hopefully be solved as I will have a drying mooring and can regularly clean the paddle wheel! But you would have thought that the manufacturers would have solved this problem by now by coating it with Teflon or something.

Very bad experience. In Mid Solent I unplugged the spinner to clear the fouling and when I returned it it snapped the brittle plastic skin fitting off the hull. Fortunately I had softwood bungs.

Never again will I have one of these without a bronze skin fitting.

I've had two boats with NASA logs - both constantly fouled. I'm going to try the smear of grease! I may try to make a water trap around the fitting so that I don't get a bilge full if I need to pull it for cleaning.
