Hello all, sorry for this infantile albeit important question; when installing brass parts to through hull, (seacock, elbows, etc) do we use teflon tape or thread glue?

The parts I got are brass and do not seem to have a totally snug fit - making teflon (or other) tape necessary... I imagine using both is weird?

Best practices?

Is this to bed the fitting to the hull itself. If so then a decent underwater grade mastic such as Sikaflex 291/2. Apply a generous layer to the fitting and around the hole, then tighten so a good squeeze of excess occurs, but do not fully tighten yet. A layer a couple of mm thick is needed to form a flexible gasket is needed, so after the initial tighten leave to cure for a few days then tighten fully.

For securing to the threaded fitting I would suggest PTFE plus a thread sealant such as Loctite 577

Used PTFE tape on the thread for years never had a problem!
Agree with above and use Sikaflex both side on the through the hull skin fitting and tighten up AND leave it to set !!

I use PTFE tape on the threads, but more as a lubricant to help do it up really tight than to try to pack the space.

If your parts really are plain brass, don't use them. Get DZR or bronze ones instead.

You may find a back nut will be useful so that the fitting can be locked onto the skin fitting in the orientation you require.
If you use Sikaflex on the though hull you could also use it as a jointing compound between the through hull and the fitting screwed onto it esp if using a back nut as a locking nut

Many thanks everyone. The question referred to the rest of the fittings and not the through hull itself.

Sorry for the confusion - I was lost in translation there, I meant bronze (not brass)

Good idea to use a backing nut so as to get the orientation right. ;)

I am gonna PTFE the thing, then.

interesting link - many thanks!

Still, no mention as to whether we use PTFE (teflon), or other material during assembly :p.. I was also thinking of galvanic isolation if a thick layer of PTFE is used... this should be an issue, no?

When I bought my boat I found the skin fitting bedded in with string and grease....and leaking. Something else the imbecile of a surveyor missed.
