Throttle Lever Neutral Button Engages Gear

Hi,

Having soaked the original teleflex throttle/lever mechanism (on my 1970's Westerly Pageant) which admittedly has finally freed the netural button, I attempted today to refit it without success.

I've reconnected the throttle and gear cables and whilst the mechanism works freely the problem is that when you push the neutral button and then forward the lever it changes gear still rather than leave the unit in neutral.

I'm thinking that the unit, for whatever reason, is past it's best and possibly by drilling out the rivets on the back to access it might reveal what's going on but I'm looking for help/advice on what the issue may be and how to get over it given that a new lever/unit is circa £170.

Would there be any reason to cause this?

Thanks.

Behind the rubber cover on my throttle/gear lever should be a mushroom headed pin. I discovered this when the cover popped out taking the pin with it. I didn't see the "pin" which found it's way into the cockpit drain and just replaced the cover, with predictable consequences.
