I have a 1976 Camper & Nicholson 33, with Yanmar 12hp deisel engine.
The engine control consists of gear level and throttle lever. At present you need mega muslces to change between gears - big problem for mooring. Does anyone know if it is possible to transfer this to sinngle level operation. And by doing this will it make maneovering in out of gear less stiff?

Before you even think of single lever control you need to find out why the cable is so stiff. You need to check if it is the cable or the lever or heaven forbid the gearbox.

I had a similar problem on a YSE 8 many years ago, I checked it all out and found no problems other than the fact that it was stiff to use and the lever is very short. I solved the problem by removing the knob from the lever, wrapping a few turns of Duck tape on it and then fitting the bilge pump handle over it, the extra length made all the difference and its easy to remove it when you dont want it. But first try the lever with with the rods disconnected at the engine end to see if it is ok. The Gearbox on the YSE is very big and heavy and was originally operated with a long lever, so thats why its heavy

YSE 8 and YSE 12 Yanmar's do not lend themselves to single lever control due to the fact that to stop the engine as per the handbook the throttle has to be fully closed. The gear operating system has parts that bear on a collar that operates the ahead and astern clutches. It is vital that engine alignment is perfect as any mis-alignment may shear off the end othe operating lever( inside the bell housing between engine and gearbox) This part is no longer available from stock. I had to have one made, not cheap but it made the operation easy. The length of the gear box operating lever has adjustment, the length of the cockpit lever needs to half
as long again as the inner cockpit lever. Its heavy engineering but thats what it takes
