Before we embark on our boat for the summer, just thinking about what else we will need while i still have time to get things.

So what do you consider to be your Three things that you really could'nt do without or find most useful, i'm talking about boat equipment here or equipment you've bought and adapted for life aboard ? Things that if it broke you would be immediately on the net looking for a replacement ! I heard Cobb BBq's where a great addition so i have one of those, so i hope you get the idea of what i mean....

Thx

1. iPod
2. Laptop
3. Camera

+1
iPods (MP3 players generally) were invented for liveaboards. Ditto big hard drives for movies and Kindles/e-readers for books.

Laptop lets you keep in touch like nothing else.

I used to get paid for taking snaps so can't remember the last time the camera came out of its bag. These days I'm more wedded to the fridge.

The big stick in the middle's quite handy, too.

Enjoy your cruise, Sam.

Now theres a little Diamond. An external hard drive !
I have an Android tablet. A decent ish one. i'm finding i can do most things with it that i do on my laptop as i'm trying to keep power consumption to a minimum i'm going to try to avoid taking the all power consuming laptop and just do with the tablet. On a side note... Problem i'm having is finding a speaker for it, thats capable of being charged via 12v, Ive found the Bose soundock can be purchased with a 12v charger but they are over 200 quids....any alternatives ?
Thanks for that, just shows many heads make light work...
Any others besides the obvious.....

Check that your tablet will power an external hard drive. Mine can manage a memory stick fine but the portable hard drive is too much for it.

In my top three things would be large travel towels like these http://www.lifeventure.co.uk/htm/was...ek-towels.html

They're very easily washed and rinsed on board and dry in no time at all, unlike normal terry towelling towels, which use up huge amounts of water when hand washed and take forever to dry. Wouldn't be without them even though they're a rather pricey initial investment.

Can't think of two more but I'm working on it! ;)

The most important items for for me are....

A balanced electrical system, with so much dependent upon sufficient electricity, decent solar panels and a wind genny are essential.
After that a really decent anchor and chain.
The third and final item is a an inflatable with good sized tubes to keep you dry in a chop and with a decent sized outboard - 8hp

I've an older JBL On Tour that takes batteries or uses 240v to run with excellent quality sound, it fits in a rucksack pocket and is pretty rugged. Over the years it has traveled all round the world with me and never fails to deliver (http://the-gadgeteer.com/2004/10/05/jbl_on_tour_portable_music_box/). Using batteries means it has no trailing cables when used in the cockpit. The modern version I believe has a USB cable so can run off a laptop or any other USB charger.

1. Sense of humour.
2. Rule portable deckwash pump, best gadget I've bought for the boat.
3. Memory sticks. Not external hard drives, I've had 2 of them fail, lost most of my music...
