We're just starting our fourth season with Skybird and despite cruising and rafting fairly extensively, we have never had anybody cross the cockpit from a boat lying outside us.

This weekend, on Lymington Town Quay, it happened twice - different people off different boats.

In each case we politely told them that etiquette dictated you cross the foredeck and they apologised.

You can't blame the beginners although you'd think people with any sense would figure it out for themselves. The people I really blame are the skippers who should ensure their crews are fully briefed before going ashore from a raft.

Anybody else noticed a problem this season so far...?

Not sailed yet this season,

But...

Its always been one of those subjects that I've found a little awkward...

I certainly brief my crew about crossing in front of the mast... and try my best to remind them and enforce it...

However, I do feel a bit like I'm being a snob/prat/git if I ask someone else crossing my boat to cross in front of the mast... especially if they have kids with them...

Anyone else slightly embarassed to point out this etiquette misdemeanour to other boats?

I often have the opposite experience. I frequently have a dinghy rolled up on the foredeck and invite people to cross through the centre cockpit to avoid the cats cradle of lashings. Many people, particularly the French (toujours la politesse), are too embarrassed to do so.

my boom extends forward of the mast and it can give you a nasty crack on the head if you don't duck. whenever someone comes aboard in a raft i say 'mind your head on the boom as you cross the foredeck'

those who know the rules thank me, those who don't may say something like 'do you want us to go round there' to which i say 'yes please'. problem solved.

The benefits of crossing in front of the mast

There was one occassion when the stunning daughter of the boat rafted up alongside me was brushing her teeth in the foreward heads. She had the top hatch open and much to my pleasure, I couldn't avoid seeing her splendid pair of lady bumps. No, I didn't keep on crossing... Okay, I have to admit it, I did. Hmm the mamory.

This hasn't got anything to do with the title of the thread, 'Three seasons without it then twice in a weekend.'
Er, or has it?

Re: A little dogs calling card.

A friend of mines little dog hopped across to the boat they were rafted up to and left a calling card, but at least it was polite and did it on the foredeck.
