I watched three men last night

http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/b018nwbz/Three_Men_Go_to_New_England_Episode_1/

The hand of the researcher lies heavily on it

the contrived challenges - the unlikely co-incidences - the dressing up

the uncomfortable parallels between top gear and three men are growing

but at least in top gear all three men like cars

Rory and big D spend most of their time dissing boats and sailors

not sure why they are there

I must say I prefer GRJ when he is alone with his dog

showing you bits of country he loves and knows about

http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b00mbv0c

I think I would like to see more of GRJ and less of the other two

- although I love Big D in when he is behind a desk controlling comedians

and Rory should do spring watch as he actually knows about birds

I reckon they get the balance about right.
You, of all people, should know that to get prime time and big budgets relies on a wide demographic.
So it's contrived. What isn't on telly.
Like the Jools Hootenanny that they record in October , etc. etc.

It was just nice boats and good filming. I enjoyed it.

Having read "To The Baltic With Bob" and watched the 3 Men series, GRJ does come across as a miserable sod prone to tantrums, and I find that a bit of light relief in the form of R.M. and D.O' B. is needed to counter this.

And yet, however, I still enjoy the 3 Men series however contrived, as it does show some nice boats and scenery with a bit of humour.

Agree with Lakey on the demographic thing. :)

I understand that the BBC make programmes for certain demographics.

Clearly I am not in the one they aimed at.

I thought it was a load of childish, contrived, annoying garbage.

A bit of sailing and nice scenery in the bleak mid winter can't be that bad.

I do agree however about Griff, it doesn't do his image any good at all.

And the cheerleaders to cheer you up...

Mike.

Overall I enjoyed it. It was an area I don't know well and featured some interesting boats. Not enough actual sailing for me.

Where next? Maybe the Baltic? Or perhaps Griff could treat us to a trip on Argyll, the S&S classic that replaced Undina. They could do a nice trip along the riviera visiting classic regattas. Perhaps we are just jealous that they have got the BBC to pay for their hols!!!

Argyll nearly featured in their Adriatic adventure. Unfortunately I think the costs of sailing her there were a bit much for 5 minutes on camera. No doubt she will feature one day though.

Argyll is a lovely boat. She was completely refurbished/rebuilt at Rustler Yachts and was in the shed next to my boat which was in build at the time.

Stunning to look at but I wouldn't like to be responsible for all that varnishing.

I agree though, a trip to the Baltic in that might make the program bearable, as long as they leave Rory and Dara behind, and replace Gryff with someone who is interesting and less of a whinger.

The reality of course is to get a programme on BBC2 prime time it has to have broad appeal, so I suspect we are stuck with this format for the time being, at least it does give us a bit of sailing if you can put up with the three of them. The bigger issue is that BBC4 funding is under pressure so the chances of another series like the excellent "The boats that built Briatin" with Tom Cunliffe may be slim.

...I watch it for a much-needed, off-season "boat fix", and if "Three men" is not on, then there are always repeats of "Coast" on somewhere if you look hard enough.

Yes it's moving closer to Top Gear, but at least there's a tad more variety and it's still slightly less predictable than Top Gear ...which unfortunately has run out of ideas.

I'm afraid the less said about that series the better. At least 3 men in a boat doesn't have to tell porkies.

Only got commissioned because of the personalities involved. The whole thing just got worse and worse and ever more improbable.
If you'd cobbled that together it would probably never have got past the concept and certainly what was done should not have been allowed out of the editing suite.

+1

Just three 'personalities' just trying to bump up their pension pots.
