Quote from the introduction in the Penguin Classics edition.

By 1895 some 400 steam launches were operating on the river...."they were resented by oarsmen and fishermen for the noise they made, for the clouds of black smoke belching from their funnels and for the wash they set up,and their owners were widely regarded as pompous, self important, over weight and over fond of the bottle"

Good job things have changed out of all recognition then :)

I'm glad you posted that, I was wondering what to read next and I haven't read that for years - must get it from the library and re-read it.

Another funny book by JKJ was "Three Men on the Bummel", where the three "heroes" decide to do a cycling tour in Bavaria.

It's nothing like as funny as Three Men in a Boat though.

I think it probably is but it's so similar in plot and style that when you've read one of them, the other doesn't have the same impact.

Bit like those Patricia Cornwell books - read one and you've read them all!
