If all went according to plan, my boat was lifted out this morning and should be tucked up in the yard for the winter.Which has led me to reflect on the season just ended ...

Normally I spend four or five weeks on board with my small crew each summer. This week we did 2 1/2, back home, 1 week, mainly because of a family memorial service.

Despite the interruption and the shorter overall time, we had one of the best years ever. That was largely down to the weather, which allowed us to adopt a policy of never spending more than one night in the same place. Less hiding from Scottish weather.

Our itinerary ended up as Port Bannatyne - Ardrishaig - Crinan - Easdale - Tobermory (Aros) - Loch Drumbuie - Acarseid Mhor (Gometra) - Ballygown Bay (Loch Tuath) - Ulva - Kilchoan - Salen (Loch Sunart) - Kerrera - Kilmelford and then Kilmelford - Eilean Mor MacCormaig - Gigha - Campbeltown - Carradale - Port Bannatyne. Not a particularly long distance or wide area, but a great range of places. In future I must try to remember that short trips are fun - I have a tendency to try to go as far as possible each day, which really isn't necessary.

Generally the boat worked well, though one solar panel has died (cheap Chinese), the GPS/AIS conked out (cheap Chinese) and the new engine continues to be a pain (expensive French).

But overall my lesson from this year is "Don't try too hard and take pleasure where you find it."

I too am nearing the end of 4th year with this current yacht on the south coast uk. It has been another excellent year. Last year was really good, this year even better. Good weather, good crew, fun racing, a trip cross to France was perfect and another year of no rainwater leaks!

Not quite over yet, a couple more Bay races to do and at least one more short cruise to somewhere in the Solent area.

We've had this boat just under seven months and it still has less than 20 hours on the engine! This is down to a combination of working flat out and a close family member becoming quite seriously ill in the late spring. We have, however, spent more than 50% of that seven months aboard, so I think we've got our money's worth out of her. Now just hoping for some decent weather throughout the winter so that we can actually get some sailing in!

Does that include every alternative/option then?

No. I feel excluded and disciminated against by your blatant recognition only of genders with which I do not identify.

Please include recognition of my self-identified gender. If you do not, you are still discriminating against me.

I shall vigorously maintain my right not to be offended.

Yours,

Morally Confused of the Left.

No apostrophe's. Lose points.:)

As I understand it, it’s a bit like thermodynamics: the second law of diversity states that entropy always increases with time.

It’s going to be tough for our children mind:

“Married Sir?”

“No, I’m LGBTTQQIAAPGUIHGFFGHJHHBTTTFCWWQ......” :ambivalence:

Meaning loose apostrophe?(This is getting like those famous corrections columns in local newspapers...)Mike.
Agreed, people running fast and loose with grammar insenses my friend Jame's from Tumbridge Wells. He says you have to 'really watch' for ungramatical and mis-spelt sentances. :) :)

My year went to plan. It was sail or fail. After a very long refit This year was to get sailing and stop doing things. I achieved that with some nice weekend voyages out of Craobh Marina. The purpose was to start enjoying sailing for sailing sake firstly, shake down secondary. The boat was tested well in strong winds and some big seas and we had a thoughrly good time. Anchor gear worked well with the refurbished windlass going a treat.

All in all a good season and I intend to sail through the winter in between closing out minor punch list items.

New sails this autumn and a new auto helm still to be installed when delivered.

Happy as Larry!
