Some time ago on the GPs Group I run - we discussed internal antennae GPS and the cheaper end where no external connection is provided ..... eg eTrex.

A re-radiating antennae can be used where signal is picked up outside cabin / car etc. and the re-transmitted inside ... where gps picks up signal.

Various home made versions have been shown on net ..... such as :

Re-radiating antennae DIY

There will of course by now be a number of ready solutions and more cosmetically attractive .... a Google search ??

But what I am illustrating is that often the comment comes up about GPS and internal vs external antennae. This lets you choose without the trailing wires etc. an external antennae GPS would have when you move it around. Once the Re-rad is fitted to boat etc. it stays fixed in place.

That's very helpful, thanks.

I bought one of those amplified antenna when my external Garmin aerial packed up last year. It's much better than the original and I found that it worked reasonably well down below; picking up the signal through my side decks.

I'll try using the reradiating idea though. It should mean that I can use my fixed and handheld GPS's without restriction.

Re: No-ones interested then ......

Well, I must have been typing my reply as the same time as you were typing your note. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Re: No-ones interested then ......

I would have posted, and been interested, had I not left my Etrex Legend on top of my cabin roof, only seconds after placing it there for safe keeping while I fastened the canopy.

It's the only thing of value I have ever lost, and am still deeply angry with myself, or at least my rotten memory.

I've placed many bids for one on ebay, but of course it's not a proper auction, but a scam, so not replaced yet. If you put something for auction with no reseve, you should sell to the highest bidder, not get a mate (or another username) to bid up to the selling price near the end.

I've not given up, but as the boating fund is now totally empty, prospecs are still poor.

I have a magellan sporttrack hand held which seems remarkably good at keeping locked on to the sattelites inside the cabin.

It works at the chart table of my boat with a balsa cored deck above it. Also worked in the wheelhouse of a Halmatic work boat (A Garmin wouldnt work in the same place).

Its only the basic cheap and cheerful model but has given lots of good service in the 3 years Ive had it.
