Your advice please.

Our boat will be coming out of the water at the end of the season when we expect to move her from fresh water to salt water.

I am told that anodes for fresh and salt water are different and I would appreciate all and any advice on the type we need for salt water and, can they be changed by me when she is on the hard stand.

She is an 11 mtr steel hulled single engined displacement hulled boat.

Thanks in advance for your assistance.

yes, you do need new anodes for salt water. You will probably have zinc fitted, which need to be changed for I think, magnesium. Its a simple enough job, just undo the fixing bolts remove and replace. Obviously they can be corroded on which doesn't help. Make sure your new ones have the fixing holes the same distance apart, although in my experience they seem to be pretty standard.

IIRC, zinc anodes when used in fresh water will eventually become covered in zinc oxide (white powdery colour?) which will prevent the anode from working. It is usually recommended to fit magnesium anodes for permanent fresh water use. For further info etc have a look at www.mgduff.co.uk

It's Zinc for salt, or even cheaper, since you have a steel hull, aluminium. Anodes on steel hulls can be simply welded on.

If you want to PM me your email address I can email you MG Duffs 'factsheet' on the types of anode and the reccommended uses/setup for each one.
