My boat is fitted with the above engine which has a Jabsco 4900-200 sea water circulating pump. The engine is fresh water cooled and the sea water is fed through a heat exchanger.

I have just overhauled this pump with parts supplied by ITT. No problem at the present time but as this pump is now obsolete the question of continued support for parts could present a problem in the future.

Has anyone fitted an alternative pump to one of these engines? I would like to have the benefit of their experience. Alternatively has anyone got a spare 4900-200 pump or know where I could get one?

Phone Thorneycroft Engines, on Tel. 01772 611144 Fax. 01772 616364
ask for Technical and talk to them. They are VERY helpful indeed. They seem to keep all the bits for old engines, sold me a new Jabsco for a T.108 a couple of years back - I didn't actually need it as my problem turned out to be elsewhere but they do keep a vast range of bits for the oldies.

ASAP sell the complete pumps and spares. I refurbed the one on my T90 with new seals and grease cups. The cost of a new unit was eye-watering.
If the pump dies I will replace with an electric one powered from the starter low volts circuit as modifying the mounting and pulley would be a pain. It would also reduce the space occupied in the eingine compartment.

Hi Thanks for your response. ASAP no longer sell the complete pumps. Spares seem to be available at present. I have overhauled the the existing pump with impeller, seal etc. just keeping en eye to the future. Could fit a new engine I suppose!

I am sure I have one, possibly a second stripped down, in with my Newage bits. PM me if you need parts and I will dive into the glory hole.

Thornycroft water pump

No doubt you saw the replacement pump on the website?

http://www.jabscoshop.com/search.aspx?q=4900-200

Jabsco (and ASAP) have recommended the 52040-2001 since this unit has the same preformance as the 4900-200. ASAP also suggested a Johnson 209731. No experience with Johnson so would probably go for the Jabsco even though it's more expensive. Both pumps require modifications to the mounting.

Jabsco advise that parts will be available 'for a few more years' so will probably plan ahead for a future installation. In the meantime stick with the refurbished pump.
