Does anyone have any hints or tips on how to get the pulley wheel off the front of the FW pump on a BMC 1.5? I have to change the pump and cannot get at the holding bolts. I have tried kindness, violence and WD40. It is too close to the front bulkhead to get a clutch puller in and this bulkhead is covered in expensive noise deadening material so I am reluctant to use heat. I would be grateful for any suggestions!

Thanks in anticipation

If it is an early Jabsco pump with twin grease pots, I had exactly the same problem. First thing to do is try a hub puller, preferably four legged one available from Halfords or similar.
That's a textbook solution (I guess), but mine wouldn't budge.
I had a bit more access and could take the whole pump off the engine and put the pulley onto a press. It took about half a tonne to move the shaft!
It is possible to service the pump without removing the pulley wheel but it involves destroying the impellor and taking the dog from the shaft rebate. The pump can then be moved back off the shaft and pulley and it goes back together fairly easily. Of course, that pre-supposes you can get access to the pump body.
Sorry I can't help further. It looks like you will have to take the pump off with a combination of sockets and o-ended spanners, BTW, I found the nuts and bolts were Whitworth which meant my AF and metric spanners chewed the faces.

Thanks - I have been through that one! it is actually the Fresh Water pump on the front of the engine which is defeating me at the moment. The pulley wheel shrouds the fixing bolts and I cant shift it.

I assume you mean the circulating pump at the front top of the engine driven by the same belt as drives the alternator. If so, I know what you mean as I suspected a rattle/light ringing noise being this pump but found the cause only after comming across the same problem as yourself.

I have a manual from Thornycroft engines but thats not much help.

Best advice I can offer is to telephone Sean at AMC Diesels (Thornycroft Engines) on 01772 613003. Very helpful in the past
