Older members will no doubt wish to spend a few moments to-day in contemplation of the exploits of the late Thor Heyerdahl, the Norwegian explorer who as long ago as 1947 mounted the Kon Tiki expedition. I, for one, will be re-reading the books of his exploits over the next few months.

Not, perhaps, the last but...

Certainly one of the most charismatic and inspiring. He was a true original. He did a lot to enliven my pre-adolescent youth and, helped to inspire my enthusiasm for boats and the sea.

Brings back memories. I chose "The Kon-Tiki Expedition" as a school prize just after it was published. I still have it! In fact I think it deserves another read in memory of a great explorer.

When I was a lad , I remember my dad passing the Kontiki book over to me to read when he finished it. I was hooked from page 1 , marvelling at this unique man doing such a unique thing and writing about it so well . Wish there were more like him.
