There has been discussion of this video on KiteCam forums but unfortunately the original maker has not forwarded details about his rig. Usually the camera is fixed to a rigid frame via the tripod mount and then fore and aft lines from the frame keep the camera pointing down the fixed kite line.

The other problem is sideward’s swing. Software exists to eliminate this but it works by clipping the margins of the video.

Judging by the curved horizon in the video a wide angle adaptor has been fitted to the camcorder to help keep the boat in frame during camera swings.

Hi
I emailed Chris (whose film this is) and got this reply:

"Thanks for your comments, glad you liked the video. Have a look at the following sites as they cover, in great detail, the techniques and components of Kite Aerial Photography:

http://arch.ced.berkeley.edu/kap/
http://www.brooxes.com/

I use a small, Sony, digital video camera flown from a 12' Delta kite. The camera is mounted on picavet that's suspended from the kite string. The latter sites cover in good detail what a picavet is. Good luck with your kite efforts!

Fair winds,
Chris"

Hope that helps you guys.
Maybe a waterproof housing (as used by divers) would help protect the camera in the event of dunking it but this would obviously increase the weight.
Cheers
D
