This weekend\'s \"which boat\" question:

I'm wondering about trading up from our 22 foot bilge-keeler to something a bit bigger, and would be interested in any suggestions you might have about suitable boats:

Cruising area will be N. Wales / Irish sea, mainly for day/weekend sailing with me SWMBO & 2 kids (will be teenagers soon), but with occasional weeks from time to time.

To pass muster with SWMBO, it must "look modern" (as yet, undefined!), and have 3 cabin spaces, so that the sleeping stuff doesn't intrude into the main cabin, and we can sleep separately from the kids - Ideally a double and two single berths.

Should be rewarding to sail, without being skittish or too demanding, and possible to sail single-handed.

Probably looking at a maximum draft of not much over 4' (or a lifting keel), length 28 to 30 and a bit feet.

Ideally to be got for ~£25k, preferably a bit less, possibly a bit more.

The two boats that have ticked most boxes so far have been the Hanse 301 (ideal, but too expensive), and Gib Sea 84 (not "modern" enough, but probably just the upholstery!!!)

Suggestions as to other boats to consider ??

Provisional name: Redundansea /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Bilge Keel Hunter Horizon 27 (already in the North West):

Here

1 foot under on length, but only 3'2" draft. Double aft cabin plus twin in forepeak and twins in saloon?

1991 - so quite modern - and looks good.

Fjord 28CS. Scandanavian chic, highly practical for those damp northern weekends. Quite pacy but maybe not a good enough sailer for you. (a couple for sale at the mo. too)

On my list of 'boats I would like but will never get'. A very long list needless to say.

Happy hunting. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Defintely a couple worth loking at here : a few small boats worth looking at

I am sure they might just pass muster with SWMBO /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Tee-hee /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif The lowest price bracket on their search facility is "up to $5,000,000"

I should also have said that we've looked at Leg-ends in this size range (30 odd feet, not 250 feet), and the 'open plan' interior was not approved of. (I'm not sure what the interior is like on the Hunter 27).

hefty price tags - I wonder if they ever achieve anywhere near their asking price, especially with so many to choose from?

I have heard that the Gib Sea 84 is very seaworthy for its size, - had a look round one recently and they are roomy too. Interior woodwork might be a bit on the dark side for some tastes though.
