This weekend

If the low arrives as deep as forecast by some of the weather models, I doubt the powerboats will be going far. Nor wil many yotties either.

Hopefully, the winds won't be as strong as the GFS model is showing today.

Thanks for the warning. I wont be out on the boat this weekend myself, but it is a shame though that a bank holiday weekend has been chosen, when it may not be safe for a small boat to cross the Solent.

Also, judging by the number of mobos seen out of the marina so far this year there might not be too many like minded spectators.

Whatever they are doing, Colregs still apply. A small sailboat can therefore still sail in safety, and a small motorboat can motor in safety as long as they choose their direction carefully.

Agreed and they are all made aware of that. However if planning an excursion through the Western Solent at those times it doesn't hurt to be aware. Much like the RTI or Cowes week.

Fully agree with you. The problem could exist in these situations when a completely unsuspecting novice pokes his nose out (for the first time?) into lake Solent, could be a bit of a shock.

I do wonder how the helm of a cigarette doing 40knts can see anything ahead.

We are (were?) planning to go to Poole this weekend. Saturday was marginal to begin with. With the forecast winds and now these buggers hurtling about, I think we may decide to go west on Friday and spend Saturday sampling the fleshpots of Lymington or Yarmouth before deciding which way to go for the rest of the holiday weekend.

Once they are on the plane, vis is better than your boat:p

There is nothing in front of the driver to obstruct his view like sails etc. Until then it's like driving a narrow boat with a cartoon fat bloke sitting on the back and the bow pointing upwards into the sky....Luckily the time when they are like this they are travelling slowly for a short time before the bow drops down and the boat accelerates into the distance.

As Snooks says, visability is actually very good and even when at displacement speed and accelerating, a well balanced / trimmed / driven boat will have very little bow lift as it climbs up onto the plane. the point at which they look like cartoon boats is when they are going faster than displacement speed but not fast enough to get over the hump, usually when they are lining up behind a start boat thats prehaps not well matched to the race speed of the fleet.

on the question of berthing, challanging sometimes, i think some of the bigger boats with crash boxes on the drives need engines to be off to change from forward to reverse gears which i am sure makes berthing interesting!

With Simon JK talking of F9 on Sat through the Channel, I'm not sure the sea will be as smooth as in Snooks photos. Suspect it could be a bumpy ride.
