This Summer\'s Cruise?

Thinking of going to Germany, Possibly via Rotterdam to the Rhine, aim to go as far as possible and come back in 6 weeks? Sailing from Cowes and returning to Cowes.
Always thought that the Rhine would be entertaining, all those German Barges and us in a 58 foot Schooner with a 1 1/2 yard red duster on the stern.

Anyone got any good ideas or have experience of this voyage?

Or better ideas on where to sail to this summer?

Regards

Der Rhein

Is a fast-flowing river. Make sure you have power to spare. If you want to see Germany, I would go up the Elbe to Hamburg and across to Berlin and all the lakes surrounding it. The Maas is pretty and slow flowing, but lots of locks. It will take you into Belgium and France though, ofering the chance of a round trip rather than up and down the Rhine.
I must admit the Rhine is impressive though. Loads of shipping, many moving fast on the "wrong" side, hence the blue boards with flashing white light. Cologne is a cool city. There is a chocolate museum at the habour entrance and the beer is great!

Might you be interested in Sail Bremerhaven, 10th - 14th August. I am sure you would get a great welcome there? I can PM you more details if you are interested, and could loan you charts of the R.Weser.

Schooner?

Interesting. You wouldn't go far. The first fixed bridges are only 40 miles inland. You won't get to Germany in a Schooner of anyting over 20 ft using this route.
Or do you want to get the masts off?

Sail Bremmerhaven? SOUNDS LIKE FUN, Is there a web site or some similar means of sourcing info?

We have only sailed the coasts of Europe so going in land should be a bit of an adventure. Ant help would be most appriciated.

Re: Schooner?

Only 40 miles inland? it seems to me that I have seen photos of much begger vessels than Talisman on the Rhine. What clearance under these briges? and what depth under them also? we are 56 feet heigh and draw 7 feet!

Still seems like a good plan to me, am I nuts?
