I went to my local camping shop (Casey's in Chester) to enquire as to how to go about fixing rips and tears in canvas. I expected to come away with some canvas strip and glue.

Actually I came away with a tube of what I can only describe as clear liquid plastic. Its called SEAMGRIP. The guy at the shop gave me a demo on a repair he had effected on a piece of canvas and asked me to pull the repair apart, I couldn't.

All you do is hold the edges of the tear together with some tape and run the clear liquid along the length of the tear so that you get about a 10mm wide run. Then leave it to cure (it doesn't dry, it cures). Its then stronger than the original. It also fixes wetsuits and dry suits, and if you put your mind to it, many other things.

The stuff is made by McNett Corporation in the USA <A target="_blank" HREF=http://www.mcnett.com>http://www.mcnett.com</A> and distributed in the UK through McNett Europe in Sheffield.

A tube on your boat may well come in handy and at £6 its cheaper than getting the canvass repaired or replaced.

Yeh,
seen this stuff before; it's a polyeurethane adhesive which works as a sealant/gapfiller. It's also sold as seaseal and a bunch of other names with sea, seal and sure mixed in even quantities. available in most camping and sporting goods shops; ask for wader/drysuit repair glue and this is what you'll be sold. It's very good for getting a few more years out of oilskin trousers that have gone at the bum or the knee, or fixing leaky wellies.

I've just ordered some(cheers Dave). I've got a rip in my canvas and a crack in my vinyl seat. I'll let you know how I get on.
