Borrowed a camera to try and show a friend why I enjoy sailing and the East Coast and discovered...

It ain't as easy as it be lookin'

Lessons learnt:
1 Look at lens first, if it be covered int' mud wipe it wi' T shirt
2 Just 'cos it got zoom. you dont need to use it
3 When videoing don't whistle incomperhensible toons
4 When it be windy don't poke the camera at it
5 Voice overs are useful if they can be heard
6 When boat be moving don't move camera as well
7 Diesel engines are noisy!
8 Charge the camera before ye go, hence I shall be forever off Walton

Excellent! But for the complete Cholmondley-Warner effect you need to edit it to monochrome

Hard enough using strange software to get anything together let alone monchrome, the camera uses its own file type. MOD and the camera berk only works on red

Have a look at this. Then get a copy of Adobe Premier Pro and you can do what you like with your video.

Talisker makes most things appear right at the time! Great effort - but I don't think I'll be joining the video age! I hardly ever remember to get the camera out.

You have identified the main problems - clean lens, holding it still and voice loud enough

as far as I can see nothing stnding between you and a glittering career as a film cameraman

You missed the main trick I employ. Tsake LOADS of film, then you have plenty to pick from when it comes to the edit

I'm starting to get to grips with it though. I'll take a shot, instantly realise it won't work in the rough context of what I want the final bit to be like, then re do it. If you look at the raw footage I have (and you never will, haha), lots of those scenes are done in threes or fours back to back.

Actually, I'm finding the hardest bit is the edit. I'm using final cut now, and it takes ages, not least because the new cam uses it's own format, so everything has to be rendered before it will play on the timeline. I'm half tempted to go back to iMovie until I have the luxury of a few weeks to knock together a proper full length edit of the entire trip, but on the other hand, I need to stick at final cut because there's loads to learn.

I'll see if I can watch your vid now, although I'm at sea, so might not be able to. In that case, I'll have a nosey when I get to Blyth.

Good on you though, the world needs more sailing videos. You tube certainly needs more where it's not just a completely pointless 30 second holiday capture of a few people on a boat, usually with beer.

The Ship in fog reminds me of why I avoid poor visibilty!!
