We are currently in St Quay Portrieux making our way along and then down. When we run out of down in Europe we will decide on left or right, at the moment we are leaning towards right, and across the Atlantic.

Today I recieved a quote for third party insurance from pantaenius which would cover us for down and left (ie into the Med) but not the rest of the World. In fact they only do third party for European waters.

Apparently 3rd party will be required as we skim along Portugal at the very least but given the fact that we are still learning and that our old cheap boat is still quite big and often reluctant to do what we want it to do in the company of other, less old and cheap (this is all relative of course) boats I would prefer that level of cover.

Sorry for long explanation but short question is who else could I try for cover which was international? I have tried searching here, noonsite & google but am having real difficulties finding the answer.

Haven Knox Johnston don't exactly say on their website that they cover worldwide (well, I didn't see it) but there is a strong implication that they do. I have been with them for many years, service has always been good.

I have just had a look at my third party insurance documentantion from Pantaenius Germany and it clearly states that I have worldwide cover which is what I requested right from the start in 2008.

Pants...

last time I enquired (Pantaenius UK) they only covered europe third party, a search of the forum implies a change in policy a couple of years ago. It really is a problem (guessing there is no money it) but why does the 3rd party risk increase out of europe ? Less Marina's, less traffic but more rum related fraud ?

Third party risk does not increase out of Europe, it's apparently the risk of being in America or meeting Americans that is unacceptable. I had a conversation with someone at one broker who explained, mostly in one ear out the other I'm afraid. But the summary was that it would be just too expensive to underwrite. I'm currently awaiting a quote from insurers via the French cruisers website stw.fr. If the answer is positive then I will update so the next person who searches for this answer will find it.
