Having just paid an eye-watering 25 Euro for a litre of No.7 thinners (xxylene based) is there any reason not to use white spirit for self erodong AF if drying time is not an issue?

Yes, a very good reason White Spirit will not dissolve the A/F base. Try it and you will have a Jelly like goo mixed in with the clear White Spirit but not dissolved in it. In the past I have used Standard Thinners (AKA gun cleaner) @ ~£1/liter though I think It may have gone up a bit - maybe £1.50/l now

It works fine with oil based a/foul, because I have done it in the distant past, but xxylene???? wtf is that?

Merely a typographical error. Should have read xylene. Or more correctly dimethylbenzene.
International thinners no 3 however contains trimethylbenzene and solvent naphtha
