Interesting post on www.yachtsurvey.com about the problem a major boat builder has experienced with the hulls of boats produced with balsa cores below water line.Curious, problem only appears in stateside craft and have not heard of this happening over here.

Thanks Oldgit

I have just read the link I have a S** **Y a 1993 from the USA though at 27ft I don't think it effects my model unless I have read it wrong. My build seems fine and the survey came up ok when I bought it do all boats have a balsa core may be a stupid question I know, but boat manufacturing techniques is not my field. Can anybody enlighten me.

Sad...

...to see how many "famous" companies think that the less their customers know, the better.
This does not happen just in the boating industry to be honest, but I do think that in this market it's particularly true.
Most boatbuilders seem convinced that whoever is so fool to give them a lot of money to purchase their products, then he/she deserves to be fooled over and over.
BTW, did anyone read about that in any specialized magazine? OK, probably it's better not to mention.
What's the point in worrying the poor boat enthusiast, and maybe put at risk the advertising budget as a side effect?

I gather from the series of articles on this site that it is the 40-50 footers that have the problem. If you have a look at some of the other posts on the site. ie.Are they still fibreglass boats? etc, loads of info about plastic boat hulls and assorted other drawbacks associated with cost cutting and modern? advanced methods of boat construction. At least a few osmosis blisters can be repaired, some of the problems with sandwich construction when used below the waterline are only now appearing.
