we need heating for the boat - but on a budget (as usual) so we are thinking of buying a second hand heater and installing ourselves

we want it for a 30ft yacht - 2 cabins. Is it Ok size wise?
are they easy enough to service as I would service it before installing
is installation fairly easy? it is apparently complete except the exhaust

where do you guys site your heater - presumably it needs to be fairly accessible to service - that really means in my cockpit locker I guess. I presume that means putting some sort of shield around it to stop stuff burning against the heater unit??

does anyone have the installation and operating instructions?
If I cop out is there a portsmouth based service/installation company that you would recommend?

anything else - thoughts please

all you need is on the mikuni site & their servicing is very reasonable. if you need ducting & lagging contact David2453 of this parish
my heater lives in with the engine

thanks. am digging through the site now. can't find the pdf of the installation instructions. locating it in the engine bay is a good plan!

I have both the operation and service manuals for the my 30. pm me your email and I'll send you the pdf files. Its an excellent heater.

Assuming an average layout vessel of your size should be fairly well covered by the 3.5kw Mikuni. Usual install site is in a cockpit locker, drawing air from outside the locker, but only a survey or your knowledge of the boat in combination with the install manual will confirm that. You will not find Mikuni PDF service manual on the web, like Wallas they are jealously guarded as far as copyright goes, if you want one then just PM me. Mikuni do not produce a marine install manual at all, but if, in combination, you use the Mikuni service manual with the Webasto marine install manual and are prepared to accept them as instructions then it will result in a good install. Finally, unless you have access to the correct equipment (exhaust gas analyser, ultrasonic cleaning bath, presses and the like for bearings, variable power supply to verify voltage tolerance etc) you will not be servicing it, all you will do is strip it, poke some carbon out and put it back together, it will work but it will not have been serviced, as you will better understand when you have seen the manual. BTW, the correct exhaust and skin fitting will set you back about £200. Mikuni Uk are half an hour from you and you will not do better than that.

brilliant replies - thanks everyone for taking time to reply - exactly what forums like this are for :)

also helps massively in pricing the second hand unit - having to factor in the cost of the fittings and the "proper" service

cheers

My MY 30 replaced the original Webasto, i just replaced the heater unit using the old ducting & skin fitting but new exhaust pipe. 4 yrs later i replaced the ducting c/w lagging, that made an enormous difference to delivered heat on the 4 outlets, there was some lagging originally but very limited to only the main run.
there was a forumite making & selling ebbersplutter skin fittings a while ago, fleabay might be worth a look. i traded my MY skin fitting for some gloplugs
