Hi All,
Think I need to make an adjustment to the gear cable on my port engine as the lever seems to travel much further than the starboard before the gear engages.

Can anyone point me to a manual online that shows how to remove the white cover box and also shows the correct method of adjustments for the cables please?

Thanks
Rob

Think the only thing you can adjust from the white box is the friction screw for the throttle cables. Having said that it has no effect on mine /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif
You squeeze the fore and aft edges of the box inwards at its lowest point adjacent to the base, and pull up at the same time to release the cover. The actual travel on the throttles has to be adjusted at the fuel pump end. I would imagine that the gear cable would also be adjusted at the business end - by the gearbox itself.
Hope this helps..

On mine, it is possible to adjust at the control end as the cable terminates with a threaded rod which is inserted into a brass bush; the bush can be removed from the control (held by a split pin) and wound to extend or shorten the travel of the cable. However, this would only be relevant if you have the problem in either forward or reverse but not both (if you follow me). The same applies to the throttle but as this works in the same way for both forward and reverse, it can work as long as there's sufficient adjust available; however, as Roo said, that can be done at the regulator and is easier anyway at that end.

The adjustment to the gear cables for a volvo twin lever is done on the drive, so AFAIK not done while in the water. In theory u might be able to give it a try as the gear cable can be reached on the drive head by removing the head cover, but can be (really) tricky though...

The version with the brass bush is (AFAIK again) for QuickSilver controls and the brash buss along with the holding pins etc is called a Volvo conversion kit sold to do just that: convert volvo cables to fit quicksilver controls...

if you have controls with white covers then they have been in use for a while so they may require adjustments
before you alter anything check you can feel the detents F N R
gear selection should coinside with the detents and the throttle should not engage before the gear is selected Both levers should have the same travel
The levers are held on to a spline with grub screws but can seize on if exposed to weather
The top cover is not held on with any screws but clicks into place
there is an adjustment on the gear arm that alters the radius and there for the throw or length that the cable will travel but this should not have changed
If fitted to outdrives the engagement of the gears may have been affected by wear and could give the problem as indicated
try puting the control to the F detent and checking if they engage or require the revs to be increased and then same for reverse gear

Thanks All for your replies so far.
Scottie I intend on lifting the cover this weekend to investigate further, I will say though that my levers have no definate detents and feel (shall we say)worn!
Can this be adjusted?
Thanks
Rob

No I dont think that you can do much more than increse the friction

is the boat in or out the water and what engine/transmission do you have
