Where do I attach them? At the other end from the thighs! The ones I've bought have a sewn in loop which I assume goes around the harness - but where? front, back or sides?

And is it a breach of SOLAS regs to use them when your not at sea /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

On ours, the loop goes at the back, on the harness (or lifejacket in our case) with the straps going under crotch and fastening to the front of the harness at the side of the harness buckle.

What make of life jacket is it? If it's Crewsaver, you have to unthread the waist/chest belt and then thread the sewn loops on as you rethread the belt. Are you sure you have all the bits? Does it come with any clips or short loops. All else failing, check the manufacturers web site or call tehm for an instruction leaflet.

I find that it is very difficult to stop them working round your side toward the front - they then prevent you lowering your leg after lifting it. This becomes immensely irritating. Mine are now fitted together at the back of the waist/chest strap. Advice is to have the strap round the thigh quite tight, but there is a comfort limit.
I really should look out for a good climbing harness.

Totally agree with impracticality of crutch straps when fitted as intended.
Personally find a single strap attached at rear and clipped at front allows one to move legs - and it still works when in the water to hold down lifevest.
