A few weeks ago I was going up and down the Orwell in my RIB and I saw this man who was on his boat moored off pin mill who waved me down, I thought not another do gooder telling me not to speed... no... he shouted "some [--word removed--] has stolen all my diesel, drained the tank" so I took him to woolverstone to get some.... Not entierly sure why diesel caps dont have locks on, I know a real sailor wouldnt sail off another but hey a little unfair... Engine wouldnt even start there was so little left in there!

Something wrong here. It's not possible to drain so much fuel from a tank that the engine won't start. It's possible - but difficult - to take so much out that the engine will soon stop, but not start... never!

My boat is moored at Pin Mill. I have never heard of ANY thieving going on there or anywhere else on the river in the last six years. I'm not saying it can't happen, but it's news to me. But sorry, the diesel story is unbelievable, not on account of my perception that the river is safe, simply because you just can't do what the chap described to you.

Regards, Mudhook

I also have a boat moored at Pin Mill and believe me thieving happens. I had a Seagull outboard and the anchor and warp stolen from the boat on its mooring 3 years ago.

A year or so prior to that the outboard engine was chainsawed out of the transom of a fishing boat that was ashore at Pin Mill.

I am not saying that it is a bad area, probably not, but it would be advisable to be aware that there are as many thieves about there as anywhere else.

I've heard similar stories.
As our tank holds about 400ltrs it's a sizeable investment. So, that made me more than a bit paranoid.

So, clever clogs here, had 'a cunning plan' (to quote Baldrick).
I switched the fuel and water caps - any so and so up to no good is in for a surprise.

And any potential tea leaves on here thinking they could outsmart me - remember: I could be lying.
I, for one, wouldn't believe a word I say.
