Stayed overnight at Fambridge on Saturday – in the Marina not the overnight visitor’s pontoon. Sunday took a walk to the Ferry Boat Inn stopping at the Gents next to the clubhouse. I carry my wallet and phone in a bum bag which I left (stupidly I admit) on the window ledge in one of the cubicles. About two hundred yards down the path, realised the mistake and went back. Bum bad where I’d left it. Opened my wallet this morning (no reason to before now) and found £40 in cash missing. Cards still there as obviously they are traceable.
Only people around were those in the clubhouse, marina staff and other marina users as the site is supposed to be secure. Admittedly the gents was open – no-one seemed to bother with the combination.
Ten minutes and a thief went in and out. Lost my faith in human nature so beware if you visit Fambridge and maybe we shouldn’t presume on the honesty of other people – even the boating community.

Bob,

Just to point out that Fambridge Yacht Haven is most definitely not a secure site. Anyone can walk around the road barrier, with a car they can call to be let in. You only have to see the number of villagers walking their dogs along the bank above the pontoons to realise just how open the site is. Sunday afternoon strollers are often seen taking a walk along the pontoons ! With the exception of pontoon access, this is a similar situation to that at Burnham Y.H..

The 'club house' is in reality a cafe open to the public and they have free access to the toilet block.

Your loss could therefore be down to a 'visitor' rather than a boater.

Fambridge Marina management have stated that they have plans to install gate access at the pontoon entrances 'this summer'. It's to be hoped that the gates are closed more often than those on the gents toilets !!
