I have just recieved a bunch of emails telling me that there is an 'issue' at theyr.net and they are now called theyr.tv. Can anyone shed some light on this? I almost suspect a scam of some sort!
It's rather strange. Theyr.net is still there, using a very similar format, but claiming to be owned by Kona Ltd in UK, and using US facilities. Theyr.tv on the other hand claim to be Icelandic, which is what Theyr always was, so hold more true, but there is no explanation on the site of what is going on.
If you read Steve's note he says that the site was poached. Certainly, when I went onto the .tv version the site had the same look and feel as the old one. The .net one just went round in a loop.
If the ..net name has been poached by a competitor and it still looks "as it was" then the old owners will be taking action as quickly as possible to have it shut down, reclaim the name etc.
But theyr.net domain was renewed on 29th October - so enough time for the "old" owners to react and start action.
I may be wrong but something doesn't "smell" right. After all theyr must know this forum exists and could post here and let us know.
In the interests of science I've been back to the .net version and it still goes round in a loop. When you try to log on it accepts your user name and password then returns you to the first screen. FWIW, I'd guess that it has been set up as a phishing page and will collect the credit card details of new users.
The .tv version acts like the old .net version.
As you say a post from the real theyr would be useful.
Reply from theyr.tv - same as the email I received:
Hi Thank you for yor e-mail. You have this mostly right
in your forum e-mails and I can repeat our statement:
Due to an unfortunate development, we have lost our
domain name theyr.net to an associate of ours who
has chosen to use it to offer a different weather
service. This was done without our consent and without
prior notice.
We have therefore been forced switch the service you
know and love to a new domain: theyr.tv
Please rest assured that our true and tried service to
you will continue at the new address.
We the undersigned are the designers, implementors and
operators of the theyr.net service that you subscribe
to and depend on.
We hope that you will continue to support us in the
future as we pledge to support you.
Had the same, also an email from Theyr.net saying they will honour subscriptions and add an extra month, but you have to re-register with "theyr v2.0". I did and it lets me into the site but, so far, although it looks like theyr.tv is the old theyr, but free, theyr.net obviously needs some work: you can get a decent map of Scotland, Ireland or the North sea, but England is now part of Wales and instead of a map I get some Spanish words and an out-of-scale meteogram. Hmmm.
All looks like it could get very messy. A possible company split and questions will arise re who owns the Intellectual Property Rights to the source code on the web-site etc. and who has the right to use it. Both sites are carrying the same testimonials as to the quality of service received.
It could so easily be an underhand action by people within the "old" theyr. The guy who has the authority to renew the domain does so - but registers it under a different owner and then tells management all is OK. No problem until the renew date pops up and it immediately transfers leaving the managment wondering WTF is going on.
theyr.tv is what we know and love as the old theyr.net. Transfer occurred in the earlly hours of this morning. The issues you are seeing with theyr.net now are things like broken links within the code.
I had a look at theyr.tv and went through most of a renewal procedure; it looks as though payment is being done through a secure site. However, I think I'll wait before committing myself. No doubt if anything is amiss it will be broadcast here!
