Does anyone know which is the correct temperature thermostat for a BMC 1.5 diesel? Took mine out toady and it says 75C, but I'm not sure if it should really have an 82C one.

Engine has been running rather cool, water in my calorifier takes a long while to heat up.

Thanks for that. The gasket is different to mine so I guess Thornycroft are not exactly the same as the BMC I have. ASAP supplies sell both a 74C and 82C thermostat for a BMC 1.5, so I just ordered both as I can't find anywhere that states which one should be fitted.

Generally the higher temperature thermostats are for fresh water cooling and the lower temperature ones for salt water cooling.

I'm not familiar with the engine . Can they be installed with salt water cooling if so the 74 C thermostat is probably for that application.

Mine is on fresh water. I will try the higher temperature one first.

The optimum engine temp on the 1.5 engine is between 70 degs and 80 degs. We have just fitted the 74 degs from ASAP to ours and the needle sits lovely all day. Not sure about the fresh water v salt water thing as I have never heared of that before so can't help you there sorry.

The distinction is not whether you are using the boat on fresh water or in the sea. It is whether you engine is raw water cooled or indirectly cooled using a heat exchanger. The latter is pressurised and allows you to run hotter. Raw water cooled engines run cooler because hot raw water, particularly if it is sea water, leaves deposits and corrosion in the waterways.
