Thermo electric cooler

I fitted a Supercool LK3 to my last boat. Worked OK in Scotland BUT it is not a real fridge. It will only reduce the coolbox temp by 10 deg or so. I can't imagine it being very practical in Greece.

Our current boat is fitted with a Frigoboat keel cooled fridge - quiet and efficient.

High power consumption for a relatively small temperature drop and I found that I was disappointed so opted for a compressor drive portable type 4 C and -18 C consumpion is exactly 2.75 amps. at 12.4 volts. On from about 0900 to 2200 when onboard. Hope that you find my useage helpful /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif

Yes, converted an ice box using a supercool on our last boat.

Better than nothing but noisy if trying to sleep in same cabin also power hungry.
As mentioned by previous posts it only lowers the inside temp by 10"deg which seems cold enough untill you compare it to a proper fridge.

Have a proper fridge on new boat, what a difference.

Now if I was doing a conversion again it would have to be a proper compressor type fridge unit, worth the extra money IMHO.
I would only consider the alternative if very cheap or limited by space.

A can't believe the negative response. I have one fitted in a deck locker and it cools down to nearly freezing. Low consumption on econcomy and automatically switches to maximum cooling when the engine is running or shore-power is on.
Have a look at these as a different alternative:-

Not a marine product but works fine on board. Ice cubes in 12 minutes. Make a box full and use in the ice chest for several days free cooling. Uses 200 watts on mains power.
200 watt inverters are now availble for around £25.

The thread\'s about Peltier coolers...

The thread's about Peltier coolers, not about compressor-driven coolers. The ice makers you've linked to are compressor-driven. And running 200W through an inverter would take about 20A at 12V!

Re: The thread\'s about Peltier coolers...

My first point was concerning the Thermocool Peltier cooler. I simply offered the very cheap Contessa ice makers as an alternative. But what difference does 20 amps make when the engine is running or the shore power is connected?

Re: The thread\'s about Peltier coolers...

The supercool that we fitted was indeed very good, it included the remote setting controller which did voltage sensing & optimised running for selected temp.

I think a lot depends on the location to which it is installed, we strugled to provide the insullation required by the manual resulting in longer running times, Ventillation was another problem, we ducted the intake from the bilge but the heat tranfered from the plate was ducted to the cabin, (big holes cut in galley),the fans were obtrusive when we slept in the main cabin (you know how silence feels) so we tended to turn it off for a decent nights sleep.

For better performance we added the ice packs but then the whole install was to elliminate there use in the first place.

A 12v electric coolbox would have been a cheaper option.

Definitelly better than nothing at all but for the extra I would buy the compressor type.
