Still taking out the rot on my old Reinell. Lifted the floor boards in the mid cabin and found saturated rotten timbers beneath. The last kn*ob heads to "renovate" the boat in 2005 simply dropped new ply onto the rot and glued carpet down over everything. Some poor sod paid a lot of money for this rip off. Why do it? I'll have all the rotten stringers out in a couple of days and new ones in bonded within a few more days.
Can't understand the mentality of these criminals!

"a few days" at £30/hour may have something to do with it.

Your estimate of 4 days = 4x8x30 = £960 (+ £192 vat) is over a grand. Hide the problem & sell it starts to become an understandable reaction then. :(

I've found the same with the floor of the Arrowbolt I'm doing up. A new floor was added (starboard side only) over the original rotted floor. It was obviously a long time ago as the new floor has long since rotted also!

What surprised me was the quality of the work in glassing over the new layer - well concealed and looked like it was original from a quick inspection. I can only assume that the extra time and effort of removing and refitting the items that overlapped the original, plus the cutting out of the fibreglass was deemed too difficult/time consuming?

I guess the difference between a bodge and criminal is whether the owner actually knew about it! I'm a firm believer that if it's worth the time and cost doing then it's worth doing the best possible. That said, I have the 'luxury' :)confused:) of doing it myself and not paying £30/hour - if that were the case it would not happen at all.

So where are the pictures anyway? We like project pictures... ;)

I doubt the buyer knew, as everything was well covered with glued down carpet. From the general standard of "work" I don't think it was a company that used an hourly rate.
What is interesting is that while opening the original sealed floors the 1 inch ply used for the floors is in perfect condition. I've just about chased all the rot out now so will leave it for a couple of months to dry out and then start putting the new stuff in. Currently opening up the fuel and water tanks to clean out and install inspection hatches.

If the previous owner had not done a bodge, you would be left with nothing to do and would not be able to stand back and look with pride at the restoration, done as it should be.
