recently in the Solent , there have been some funny looking boats,

Normally they have some buoys around them , and at night it looks like they are towing strobe light behind them.



Do you think this is some new fish catching thing ?

or are there under water party's we do not know about.?

Its not him, he is operating in the Southampton water area, passed him a few times,
These guys are working between Newtown creek /river entrance and Cowes , closer inshore to the IOW .

I saw these guys during Cowes week (or thereabouts).

If you look at the chart you will see that there is a cable to IOW between Newtown and Cowes - Could they be working on this?

This reminds me of a trip out of Plymouth many years ago !

I was follwing a bouy but not getting close to it? after about five hours I realised that the bouy was being towed ! Do not laugh !

I had to stop and review the situation and take a reading from the decca !

Seriously do you know what they are doing ? we passed them about 7 days ago. Had there day shapes up so passed correct side, but one yacht got it wrong and a chap came running out with a fog horn signalling for the guy to get out of the area. Although we passed quite close on the correct side we only just spotted the two yellow markers in the water. The sea was quite rough at the time with wind against tide, the buoys were under the water.

Whatever they were doing I can't understand why there wasn't a NM published about their operations. The anchor buoys weren't at all obvious from the low elevation of a sailboat cockpit when the current was strong and were themselves a danger to shipping. At a guess from the positions I have seen the barge in they were working on the power cables between Stansore Point and Gurnard.

Yep I'm surprised no NM as they've been there ( well N E S and W a bit) for 3 weeks or so. Also, I agree their yellow buoys are not easy to spot when the tide is running. Luckily for us, the first time we saw it was at slack but last W/E despite knowing it was there we didn't see any of the yellows till very close to them.
