I am going to leave Freya on a swinging mooring next season. Given the location, (and amount of overwatch from interested parties (SWMBO)) there should be not much chance of casual pilferage. However, how do insurance companies work out the acturial risk? Is being on a mooring seen as less safe than being in a marina? Are there steps I can take to reduce the risk (and the premium!). Given that the engine is an outboard, I will lock this in the cabin after every event. Anything else, I should think about?

I doubt if any location is secure. My boat was pilfered (dinghy and outboard stolen) while at anchor at a remote spot in the Walton Backwaters with no other boat moored or anchored anywhere in sight - in the night while I was on board asleep! Other boats unoccupied at moorings elsewhere in the Backwaters were pilfered the same night...

I had new lifejackets and sunglasses taken from my boat. However the swinging mooring, whilst being in sight of the cottage and the museum is dark at night. Aren't they all?
I now have a lock on the cabin and have always had a motorcyle cable-type lock on the motor. You'll get well fed up of taking the motor on and off.

This summer my boat was raided , but they only got away with sunglasses ,( duly reported to the police) in the open cockpit , other boats were robbed on consecative weekends , one guy sleeping abord had his tied up tender and outboard taken. leaving him stranded , he motored ashore in the morning ,but had to buy all new gear , this all happened at portdinorwic n wales ,most swing moorings are in site of the main and beach roads, and well lit by street lighting, a couple of hundred houses also overlook the straights at this point , I spent some evenings midnight till three am on the main road which is elevated above the menai stights , but saw nothing , or come to that any police patrols ! ! ! a couple of weekends later after a telephone call from a member of the public ,the police made a bungled attemt to catch the thives , it must have frighned them off , nothing happened after , Most crime in our area is drug related , but someone must be buing the loot for a few quid , the cost of repacing lost gear is very expensive , police seem powerless to do anything , but be warned DO NOT EXCEED THE SPEED LIMTS BY A FRACTION OR THEY WILL HAVE YOU /forums/images/graemlins/mad.gif
