The world's only one-hulled catamaran.

Sad to see an unfinished project like that- a lot of work gone into the single hull so far. Unfortunately you see these in boatyards all over when people run out of enough energy, money or health to complete, if really unlucky perhaps all three!

Don't understand why someone would do all that work - without the other hull how can it ever (realistically) be finished short of building the other hull from scratch???

It's a Wharram catamaran. They're home built from plans and the construction of each hull is identical. It's not a problem at all to build a second hull either from the original plans if they're supplied with the auction or from new plans puchased from James Wharram. For someone looking for this type of boat, and they're good seaworthy boats, this is an opportunity to save several hundred hours work by purchasing one hull already completed.

Trouble with todays sailors (I've got my oldgit/cranky mode switched on) is they expect boats to come factory finished and cost loads of cash. This was never the case when I started sailing, people built all sorts of craft from plywood Silhouettes and Lysanders to massive ugly steel and ferro boats. Not all were completed and not all were seaworthy but they all required a commitment in terms of blood, sweat and tears.

Depending on condition and integrity of build, this auction is probably a good opportunity for someone! Google Wharram catamarans and see how many have circled the World. Buy PBO this month where they've started refurbing a disgusting looking Hurley 20 (I think). Not everyone wants or can afford a shiny new AWB, some people prefer or are forced to put in effort to achieve their aims. Wharram catamarans are iconic world girdlers.

Cheers, Brian.

I totally agree - I built a Wharram cat many years ago and did in fact stayed with James Wharram when he was based in Deganwy before we bought the plans. We built the boat but the group broke up soon after so the boat had to be sold.
I spotted this on ebay and contacted the seller as he was originally selling it as an ocean rowing boat and advised him otherwise. I understood from the seller that the original builder had died but he knew very little about the project. If the seller still has the plans then it could be a very nice half built project - just needs another hull, sails etc. The main beams and masts seem to be there.
I would be tempted but SWMBO says I have too many boats!

What a great opportunity. I bought A Wharram Tangarroa MkIV, two hulls, unfinished project. Very low cost way into boat ownership, but, time is the enemy and I wanted to sail. I sold her on to a guy in Denmark who finished her, with added bulbous bows, to a very high standard.

All Wharram's plans are numbered and it is important to get the ownership of the plans transfferred officially via the Bill of Sale noting the plan number. I also contacted Wharram as they maintained a register of plans and owners at that time. In my case this helped the new owner with proof of VAT paid status (cost of plans) for the Danish authorities.

So for the right person this could be a very good project. I think it is a Tiki.

I see, if the seller put this info in the ad he'd probably stand a better chance of getting a sale...

You'll catch on with this reading business in time, Fishy; it's not too difficult. See post #1.

Ah, but my tongue was so firmly in my cheek that I looked like a circus sideshow at the time, hence the mildly OCD use of two emoticons! ;)

The comment arising in the fact that the seller actually hasn't done too badly by unintentionally creating a mildly amusing advert on ebay which was picked up and then supported here!

sorry, didn't see the emoticons.

Yes; viral marketing... An interesting project in hand at the moment. Should start to bear fruit next summer. No prizes for the arena.
