This must have been done a million times but i'm sick of trying different products each year. SO what is the best thing to use on the rubbing strips, hand rails, wheelhouse door etc. that will actually last more than a year.I have given up on varnish but want to retain the wood look. Maybe prep. wasn't good enough before, but i normally rubbed down to bare wood, treated with Boracle then used whatever i chose that year.Any suggestions welcome.

This stuff? http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Dulux-Tra...Material_Paint_Varnish_MJ&hash=item1e72f8888b
I'm tempted to go domestic, i'm not convinced how different 'marine' products are.

That is a porous woodstain, similar to many such offerings and commonly used on domestic items such as external hardwood doors. There are better ones such as Sikkens Novatec/Novatop which are two component finsihes. I have used these successfully and they outlast most "marine" finishes of the conventional varnish type. However they are heavily pigmented and do not give a gloss finish.

International Woodskin that I suggested earlier is a similar formulation, but is single component, unpigmented and gives a brighter finish. it has been ion the market for about 3 years, replacing an earlier similar product Sikkens Cetol. Reports so far are good on durability.

A boatshed...

I've been using this for the last 15 years. http://sikkens.trade-decorating.co.uk/products/sikkens_cetol_filter_7_plus.jsp
A bit soft but very easy to touch up and, on my current boat, is now in it's 10th year. I just give a light sand and a fresh coat each spring.
I use the 'pine' colour as it doesn't affect the natural colour of the wood too much.
There is some speculation that International Woodskin is the new 'marine' version of this. I'm not sure.

Yup- its Woodskin as near as F**kit is to swearing............................................

I used International Varnish, can't remember the name, it was a one pot version. 8 years ago I put 6 coats on all the varnish work but did make canvas covers for al the handrails and only now do they need revarnishing. Fitting the covers certainly makes the varnish work last much longer. Ideally I should have revarnished last year but didn't quite manage it as I preferred to go sailing......
I'll be interested to see how other forumites manage the varnish/coating as I could be persuaded to change!
