What's it called and what's it for?

All old cruisers seem to have one, they vary in size but don't seem to "do" anything except for an old Freeman we looked at today that had a light on it.

Apologies for the idiotic question but Google isn't helping me out here...
 
I think you are referring to a vestigial mast, usually used for displaying burgees, signal flags and courtesy flags, now on modern boats replaced by SS/GRP arches.

Too little, &
Wrong direction.

Perm any 2 from 3 & that's yotting. :cool:

Now, you know that's not true. Once in a while you will get a perfect nice breeze from exactly the right direction. Though why that only happens on days one can't get the boat, science has yet to establish.
